It’s been really quite clear for a while that the major West powers would push for a deal which would allow Putin a degree of “face”…
With countries like Russia you either crush them to pieces (militarily and politically - NOT ethnically) or you’ve got to give them a way out. It’s simply impossible that they’d admit a defeat with tail between their legs.
The West is not prepared to do the former, so realistically the latter is the most probable avenue.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this was indeed endorsed by the White House although they’re not voicing it themselves for obvious reasons.
